Online Graduate Programs

CCEE offers 2 programs 100% online:

  1. Civil Engineering master’s degree. This program provides a unique blend of technical and managerial education that will help you solve problems and compete in ever-changing civil, construction, and environmental engineering world.
  2. Construction Management Graduate Certificate. This program provides specific coursework in construction management for students who do not want a full master’s degree.

Civil Engineering Master’s Degree Admission & Academic Requirements

  1. Graduate College requirements:
    • 4 Year Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent)
    • Minimum GPA 3.0/4.0 (or equivalent)
    • Proof of English Proficiency (International Students)
  2. CCEE requirements:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (or related engineering discipline)

  1. Degree Programs
    • Master of Engineering (coursework only)
    • Master of Science (creative component)
  2. Major is Civil Engineering
    • Option 1: no specialization
      • Flexibility within major to complete coursework in 2-3 specialization areas.
      • Specialization areas include Civil Engineering Materials, Construction Engineering and Management, Environmental & Water Resources, Geotechnical, Structural, and Transportation.
    • Option 2: specialization area of Construction Engineering and Management
      • 18 credits of coursework must be completed in this area
  3. Degree requirements
    • Master’s degree is 30 credits.

    • Cumulative GPA must be 3.0 or higher to graduate.

Construction Management Graduate Certificate Admission & Academic Requirements

  1. Graduate College requirements:
    • 4 Year Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent)
    • Minimum GPA 3.0/4.0 (or equivalent)
    • Proof of English Proficiency (International Students)

  1. Certificate is 12 graduate credits (four 3-credit courses)
    • 9 credits of required courses plus 3 credits of elective
  2. Course options:
    • Required/core courses (no substitutions): CE5010, CE5020 and CE5030.
    • Elective course can be chosen from CE5050 or any CE5940 option.
    • Review ISU Catalog for course descriptions.
  3. Cumulative GPA must be 3.0 or higher to earn certificate.

Online Program FAQ’s

  • Most courses are offered fall and spring semesters.
  • Very few courses are offered summer.

Any spring or fall semester.

  • CCEE offers just one course summer semester, and that is an elective course.
  • There might be options from other departments. Students are allowed up to 6 credits outside of the department.

  • Asynchronous (no planned lecture times), however, there may or may not be organized class or group online meetings (depends on instructor).
  • Students can complete course requirements (homework, discussions, etc.) on their own time, around their work or personal commitments.
  • Courses are not self-paced.  They follow ISU semester schedule, and each course will have due dates for assignments, etc.

  • This will depend on how many courses students take in a semester.
  • We recommend 1 or 2 courses per semester for students who work full time.
  • The Certificate can be completed:
    • In 1 year if taking 2 courses/semester
    • If 2 years if taking 1 course/semester
  • The Master’s can be completed:
    • In 2.5-3 years if taking 2 courses/semester
    • In 5-6 years if taking 1 course/semester
  • MS students may take longer than MEng students due to the time it takes to complete the creative component project.

  • It is possible for courses completed in the Construction Management Graduate Certificate to be counted towards a Civil Engineering Master’s degree.
  • However, admission requirements for the master’s program must be met to be accepted to that program (BS degree must be in Civil Engineering).
