Paul Francois began his career with Pepper Construction as an intern while working towards his bachelor’s degree in construction engineering. Upon graduating in 1991, Francois joined Pepper full-time as a field engineer. He rose through the organization, building expertise and increasing responsibility, and was selected to establish and lead Pepper’s Ohio division, with offices in both Columbus and Cincinnati.

Under Francois’ leadership, the Pepper Ohio team has completed numerous impactful and award-winning projects. Some notable examples include the state’s first commercial historic property to achieve Net Zero. IKEA Columbus, The Hollywood Casino Hotel, The North American Trek in the Columbus Zoo, and the Whirlpool North American Headquarters.

As he navigated his career, Francois credits Dave Pepper, CCEE Hall of Fame honoree, for mentorship and guidance. Following in his mentor’s footsteps, Francois continues the tradition of supporting Iowa State students through internships and connecting them with Pepper offices across the Midwest after they graduate. Francois also served on the department’s Construction Engineering Industry Advisory Council for 15 years, helping maintain the excellence of our programs with his industry experience.

Francois is passionate about service. His philanthropic efforts include serving on the Board of Directors for Junior Achievement of Central Ohio and supporting the Pancreatic Cancer Network and PurpleStride Columbus. In honor of his late wife Teresa (BS Mathematics 1990), Francois established the Teachers Helping Teachers Foundation, raising significant funds for local middle school teachers to help with classroom and supplies costs. Francois also led the initiative to create the Dave and Katy Pepper Scholarship Fund through Iowa State, benefiting the students in the department.

Francois has a legacy of award-winning projects and has built one of the largest construction firms in the state of Ohio. His guidance and support for young engineers have created career opportunities, and many of his interns have continued with Pepper after completing their programs. Francois has contributed greatly to maintaining the excellence of our programs through service and scholarship, emulating his mentor and now fellow alumni award winner, Dave Pepper.
